Australia has won gold on the opening day of the 2022 Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup in Glasgow, storming home to men’s team sprint victory.

The Australian Cycling Team trio of Leigh Hoffman, Matthew Richardson and Thomas Cornish overcame France 2 in the gold medal final, stopping the clock at 42.532-seconds to win Australia’s first-ever gold in the restructured Tissot UCI Track Nations Cup.

It capped off a perfect day for the young Australians, who qualified first by 0.468-seconds and set their fastest time of the day at 42.516-seconds in the first round.

Richardson, who was part of Australia’s last men’s team sprint gold at this level back at the 2018–19 UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Hong Kong, was delighted with the result.

“Today was awesome - three very well executed, super consistent team sprints from the boys and I,” Richardson said.

“Could not have dreamt of a better day.

“We knew we were in with a solid chance at a podium, but the win was just the cherry on top.”

Australia’s team sprint women qualified fifth at Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in 48.493-seconds.

The trio of Kristina Clonan, Alessia McCaig and Breanna Hargrave bowed out in the first round versus Great Britain 1.
