How to Apply – Information for Coaches and Athletes

Coaches are invited to submit the performance data of athletes who meet the minimum Emerging and Developing Performance Standards provided in the information below. Submissions will also be accepted from; self-coached athletes who meet the minimum performance standards; and athletes under the age of 18 years who provide contact details for a Parent or Guardian.

All submissions must be received via the 2022 Athlete Categorisation Online Form

What is Athlete Categorisation?

Athlete Categorisation is used to identify, track, and prioritise athletes at each stage of the Performance Pathway, aiming to support Australian Cycling Teams in consistently winning medals at major international events; namely Olympic, Paralympic, World Championship and Commonwealth Games.

All Australian National Sports Organisations use the AIS National Performance Pathway Categorisation table to define a Sport Specific Framework. At AusCycling, we categorise athletes through five stages, from Emerging to Podium, on route to Olympic, Commonwealth Games and World Championship podium performances. This process helps us to identify, track, and prioritise athletes in Olympic and Paralympic disciplines.

How are submissions assessed?

The Athlete Categorisation Panel will be chaired by the Director of Performance Pathways or the Executive General Manager – Performance (EGM-P), or by an alternative person nominated by the EGM-P.

An independent outside observer will be present on every panel. The panel members will meet and review athlete categorisation submissions, and independently rate athletes using a process aligned to the AIS Categorisation Framework to create an athlete score.

The panel will also consider individual circumstances that may have impacted the athlete’s potential to progress and perform, and this may include but is not limited to:

  • health related items
  • personal / family circumstances
  • school circumstances
  • general circumstances that impact performance, development and/or test opportunities

The panel also has the right to consider athletes that did not meet the standards for categorisation should there be a sound rationale to do so.
