Downhill Legend Comes Back To Buller

Five-time downhill world champion Sam Hill will make his return to the downhill scene at this weekend’s round of the AusCycling Downhill National Series at Mt Buller.

The West Australian is one of 52 riders entered into the event, along with Round 1 winner at Illinbah Joshua Button and newly signed Giant Factory rider Luke Meier-Smith.

The last time Hill competed at a downhill event was three years ago in his home town of Perth.

It’s also been 10 years since he raced at Mt Buller in the National Series, where he stood top of the podium.

In the elite women’s ranks 2019 Junior World Championship bronze medalist American Anna Newkirk adds some international flavour to the field which includes the current Australian champion Ellie Smith and Australian world championship representatives Elise Empey and Cassie Voysey.

However, the biggest field of the weekend is in the Junior Men.

Seventy-seven riders will drop into the International track, which is packed with technical rock gardens, steep sections and now home to two road gaps.

Event host Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club President Dave Empey said the track was running very fast and could catch a lot of riders out if they aren't on their game.

The last time a Downhill National Series race was held at the Alpine venue was in 2019.

The event will also be livestreamed on SBS on Sunday from 11am-4pm (AEST) here.
