*IMPORTANT: Riders looking to score points towards their VRS tally are required to nominate their current VRS category in the remarks field in Entryboss when entering a category B or C event as the entry categories in Entryboss may not reflect the VRS category. We are working on a tool to simplify this process in the future.

All standalone time trials in the 2021 calendar will also be part of the 2021 Bayside Skoda Victorian Time Trial Series.

* From 1 October second year J17 riders (born in 2004) can compete in the VRS.

Interstate Participation is encouraged in the Series. These individuals will be provided a grade upon their first event entry. They are required to provide proof of their ability level at the time of event registration.

Age categories are based on 31 December 2021.

Series Categories

The following Series categories are offered in the 2021 Victorian Road Series:

Elite Men A*B,C

Women A,B,C

Masters Men A,B,C

Additional categories may be offered by the event organiser. These won’t be eligible for VRS points.

All categories allow individual as well as team entries. Teams that are looking to compete as a VRS team in 2021 must register their team before entering their first event.

*IMPORTANT: in 2021 the Elite Men’s A grade category is generally only open to riders meeting at least one of the following criteria:

  • Riders that are registered with either a UCI, NR or Elite Men's A Grade VRS team in 2021.

  • Riders that have scored the minimum required amount of grading points (45) in Elite Men’s B grade to be eligible for Elite A grade
  • Riders that have scored VRS points in Elite A grade in the last two years.
  • Riders that are members of the Australian or a State/Territory Institute of Sport
  • Riders that finished amongst the top-10 in the National Championship Road Race (Time Trial) in U23 or Elite or top 3 in J19 or Masters in 2021.
  • Riders that have sought and been given approval by AusCycling (incl. Masters A grade riders looking to change to Elite A).

Riders who enter without meeting one of the criteria may be moved to a lower grade.

Overall Regulations

The following regulations must be adhered to when staging or competing in an AusCycling Victoria State Road Series event:

Series Points

  1. Series points will be awarded for each event in the series based on the Series Point Table.
  1. Individuals will be able to accumulate points for their own ranking by placing at each event. Riders who DNF (except in Cat C events) or are a DQ on any stage or single day are not eligible for points.  Riders will be eligible for points for any stage they complete even if they do not complete the Tour.
  1. In case of a tie the rider, who has had more wins (then second-place finishes and so on) shall be ranked higher. If there is still a tie the placing in the most recent race/stage will determine the ranking.

Grading Guidelines

At the start of the year riders will have the right to query their grade, however after the first event it will not change based on the type of course (e.g., hilly vs flat) unless it is changed by AusCycling.

Riders who haven’t raced in a VRS event before MUST submit as much information as possible to support the handicapping when entering on EntryBoss.

Riders may be upgraded upon achieving a certain amount of grading points. Grading points accrued in 2019 will NOT be carried into 2021.

The following table will be used for grading points which are based on the riders’ placing and the number of starters in their category.

a) Only races that are part of the 2021 Victorian Road Series will be used as part of the grading points. No grading points will be awarded for any other open, interstate or club and combine events. Grading points will be accumulated for every single stage as well as the overall classification at the end of an event.

b) AusCycling reserves the right to upgrade (and downgrade) riders at their discretion anytime. This especially applies to riders who haven’t scored the necessary amount of grading points yet but clearly outperform in their category.

c) Riders who have scored enough points for a mandatory upgrade may not be upgraded if they have only ever scored a low amount of grading points at events (riders shouldn’t be ‘punished’ for participating at many events).

d) A rider that is upgraded during the season will retain a third of their VRS points scored in category A and B while participation points from category C events will be fully carried over from the previous grade (rounded up to the next whole number) to the next ability category.

Grading points are not carried over to the next category.

e) Riders may request to be downgraded if they are clearly outperformed in their category independently from the terrain or short-term illness and injuries.

f) Riders who are members of a registered NRS team are generellay automatically moved to A-grade*.

*Exceptions may be granted under if approved by AusCycling.

PLEASE NOTE: Any grading inquiries during the year need to be sent in writing to  [email protected].

Teams

The 2021 VRS offers a team’s classification at all events as well as an overall VRS team’s competition at category A events.

The team’s classification is based on UCI rule 2.3.044 for all categories.

VRS points scored by riders will only count towards the overall VRS points tally if they are scored by the riders nominated for the event (max. 5 per event).

Team Regulations

  1. The maximum team size is five (5) and minimum three (3) riders at each event.
  1. VRS team riders must compete in their registered VRS kit. Ad-hoc teams* can choose to wear the same or different kit. All teams will be allocated consecutive numbers for their riders at an event.

*Ad-hoc teams (=non-registered VRS teams built for the purpose to compete at a specific event for the event’s team classification) can only consist of riders that are neither registered for UCI, NRS or VRS teams in 2021. Ad-hoc teams are not included in the overall VRS Teams classification.

  1. Registered UCI, NRS and VRS teams can have additional riders compete in the event in the same category. These riders will be riding as individuals wearing the same apparel as their team and MUST NOT collude with the team during the race. Teams who breach this rule may be fined or disqualified from the event.

These additional riders will also neither be included to the event’s team classification nor will they be eligible to score any VRS points at the event.

  1. VRS teams may include up to one guest rider per event. The guest rider cannot be registered with another VRS team within the same grade but can be registered with a team from a lower grade*. Riders guest riding more than twice for a team in a higher grade will be automatically moved up retaining the points as outlined further above.

*Guest rider from lower grades will be allowed to return to race for their official team unless they are being promoted or guest ride more than once for a team in a higher grade.

5.     Registered VRS team riders may transfer to a different VRS team during the season at any time upon agreement between the rider and team. A rider who has transferred during a season is not eligible to transfer to another team for the remainder of the year.
