Facilities | DISC Velodrome, VIC

The Joe Ciavola Velodrome, also known as DISC Velodrome, is the primary indoor velodrome in Victoria.

It was opened in 2004 and served as the training base for teams competing at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in 2006. DISC continues to operate as the training venue for the VIS track team and has hosted many events from the Melbourne Cup on Wheels and The Austral, and numerous Australian and World records have been set on its boards.

The timber track is 250 metres long with a maximum banking of 42°.

The venue is named after Joe Ciavola, who competed as an amateur at the Empire (Commonwealth) Games in 1962 in Perth, with wins as a professional in the Melbourne Cup on Wheels from scratch in 1965, and Sixes in Adelaide in 1965 and Whyalla in 1967.

Joe Ciavola was elected President of Victoria Cycling in 1997, whose experience and determination led to the construction of the DISC indoor velodrome in the space that at the time was occupied by the Northcote velodrome.

Venue Management

The Joe Ciavola Velodrome is located in the Darebin International Sports Complex, 281 Darebin Road, Thornbury. It is approximately 15km North-East of the Melbourne CBD.
