About Barry O’Hagan
This year’s Tolland Open handicap has been named to honour Barry O’Hagan. Barry is the founder of Tolland Cycling Club, was the long term president of both Wagga and Tolland Cycling clubs, and is a life member of both. He was an exceptionally accomplished cyclist in his day, competing at an international level, and winning major races over a 38 year period. Examples of large wins included the 1959 Devonport Wheel in Tasmania, 1960 Wynyard wheel race in Tasmania, 1960 3000m La Trobe Wheel Race in Tasmania (with prize money equivalent to 3 years wages), 1960 Sydney “Cup on Wheels” race, 1962 Launceston Wheel race and 10 mile scratch race, and 1963 St Helen’s wheel race in Tasmania. In 1962 Barry become one of only 6 “scratch men” in Australia, which included the legendary Sid Patterson four time World champion. He won the 1992 Cootamundra Annual road classic, and in 1997 won the Australian Road Race championships in his masters category. This event turned out to be his last race ever as a failed back operation ended his cycling career.
He was also an accomplished rugby league player and coach, playing in three Group 20 grand finals with the Wagga Kangaroos, and playing in the Riverina representative team in 1962. He worked as a shearer alongside all of these achievements.
Barry continues to contribute to cycling in the Riverina region, with his ongoing involvement in Tolland Cycling Club, as well as handicapping for interclub racing events in the Riverina. We are very excited to name this race to honour his previous and ongoing achievements.
